Lagos Ride-Hailing Strike Enters Day Three as Uber Opens Talks with Drivers

By Samuel Ogunsona

A strike by app-based transport operators in Lagos has entered its third consecutive day, disrupting ride-hailing services, as Uber Technologies signals its willingness to engage drivers in dialogue to resolve the dispute.

The industrial action, which began on Monday, has seen drivers log off platforms including Uber, Bolt, and inDrive, in protest againstrising operating costs, low fares, and poor working conditions. Union leaders are demanding fare increases, reduced commission charges, and improved protections for drivers.

In a statement, Uber emphasised its commitment to engagement, stating: “Drivers are at the heart of our business, and we remain committed to engaging constructively with them through regular roundtable discussions.”

The company acknowledged the complexity of balancing stakeholder interests, adding: “Uber operates an incredibly large and dynamic marketplace, but it only works when it works for all users, riders, and drivers. Aligning our joint interests is a fundamental principle in how we run our platform.”

Uber further noted that its platform has generated significant earning opportunities for drivers, estimating additional annual earnings of N6.1bn. It cited its 2023 Economic Impact Report as evidence of its contribution to drivers’ income.

The ongoing strike marks the latest in a series of industrial actions by Lagos drivers, who have repeatedly protested against low fares, high commission charges, and unfavourable working conditions. Escalating fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs, and inflation have intensified financial pressures, prompting recurring walkouts.

Uber, which launched operations in Nigeria in 2014, remains a major player in the country’s ride-hailing sector, alongside competitors such as Bolt and inDrive. The company stated that it continually monitors local market conditions to ensure its platform reflects the realities faced by drivers.
