Yobe Clears ₦15.4bn Gratuity Backlog Owed to State and LG Retirees

By Deborah Bodunde

The Yobe State Government has announced that it has cleared all outstanding gratuities owed to retired workers at both the state and local government levels, spending more than 15.4 billion to settle the long-standing backlog.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Baba Wali, disclosed this on Wednesday in Damaturu during a press briefing to mark six years of the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni.

Mr. Wali said the payments had completely eliminated the gratuity liabilities inherited by the administration, providing long-awaited relief to retired public servants across the state.

He explained that the backlog of gratuities owed to retirees of both the state and local governments had been fully cleared, adding that the intervention was aimed at restoring dignity and financial stability to pensioners who had waited for years to receive their entitlements.

Speaking on employment and capacity building, the Secretary to the State Government said the administration had recruited 6,449 workers into the civil service and organised about 35 training programmes for more than 6,395 civil servants.

According to him, over 26,000 teachers have been trained or retrained under the administration, while more than 4,000 teaching and non-teaching staff have been recruited into primary and secondary schools across the state.

Mr. Wali said the interventions in gratuity payments, recruitment, and training were part of broader efforts by the Buni administration to strengthen public service delivery and improve the welfare of workers in Yobe State.
