Workers’ Group Urges Governments to Cushion Impact of Rising Fuel Prices

By Samuel Ogunsona

A workers’ group, Working People United (WoPU), has called on the Federal and State Governments to intervene and cushion the impact of rising fuel costs on Nigerians.

The group, which advocates the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said the surge in fuel prices—driven by tensions in the Middle East—is placing increasing pressure on Nigerian workers and citizens.

“As an immediate measure, WoPU urges the Federal and State Governments to make free transportation available to workers across major cities,” said Comrade Williams Akporeha, Interim National Coordinator of WoPU.

He added that governments should collaborate with transport unions to provide subsidised transport services until the global crisis stabilises.

WoPU also urged governments to partner with employers to introduce relief measures for workers and ensure that essential commodities are available at reduced prices.

“Strategic interventions in food supply chains and other basic necessities will help ease the burden on households and prevent further economic hardship,” Akporeha said.

The group commended President Tinubu’s leadership and urged him to act swiftly to protect Nigerian workers and citizens from the effects of the global crisis.

“While Working People United (WoPU) remains committed to the re-election of President Ahmed Tinubu, we shall also continue to advocate policies that promote the welfare, dignity, and economic security of Nigerian working people and the masses,” Akporeha said.
