Wike Confirms 1,659 FCTA Workers, Raises Alarm Over 224 Suspected Ghost Staff

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has approved the confirmation of appointment for 1,659 workers employed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), as part of efforts to regularise staff recruited in 2016 and 2019.

The Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission, Emeka Ezeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.

The statement was signed by the minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.

Ezeh explained that the confirmation followed an examination conducted by the commission on Feb. 28 for eligible workers.

He said the 1,659 confirmed workers were among the 2,281 staff members who sat for the confirmation examination organised by the commission.

According to him, a total of 2,512 workers were invited to participate in the examination, but only 2,281 attended.

Ezeh added that about 224 officers were absent from the exercise, a development that has raised suspicion that some of them might be ghost workers on the payroll.

“Some of the workers who sat for the confirmation examination were employed as far back as 2016 and 2019, while others were recruited shortly before the minister assumed office in August 2023,” he said.

Ezeh also disclosed that the commission had concluded arrangements to conduct both the 2025 and 2026 promotion exercises for FCTA staff, following approval by the minister.

He said the move aligns with the commitment of the President, Bola Tinubu, to renew hope among workers in the FCTA.

The chairman advised affected workers to visit the commission’s official website to verify the status of their names, noting that the step would enable staff to confirm whether their appointments had been approved.
