PSC Calls on Youths to Apply as Police Recruitment Opens Amid Reforms and Improved Welfare

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has urged young Nigerians to apply for the ongoing police recruitment exercise, describing it as a significant career opportunity against the backdrop of wide-ranging reforms within the force.

The appeal was made on Wednesday during an assessment visit to the Police Command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, by PSC member and retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu.

Lakanu said the recruitment drive aligns with a Federal Government directive to increase the personnel strength of the Nigeria Police Force by 50,000 officers.

“There are a lot of reforms going on in the force. This is the best time to be in the police. Those who are qualified will be given the opportunity,” he said.

He encouraged young Nigerians to consider a career in policing, citing improved welfare packages, enhanced salary structures, and clear opportunities for career progression.

“You can go for courses while in service and rise to become senior officers. It is an interesting and fulfilling job,” Lakanu added.

Addressing concerns over low participation in some regions, particularly the South-West, Lakanu attributed the trend to socio-economic factors and prevailing public perceptions of the profession. However, he stressed that policing offers dignity, stability, and meaningful opportunities for personal and professional development.

He also commended officers of the command for their performance, describing it as one of the best in the country, with a relatively low crime rate driven by effective leadership and professionalism.
