Makinde Approves ₦10,000 Monthly Transport Allowance for Oyo Workers Amid Fuel Price Surge

By Mariam Aligbeh

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance for civil servants, following the sharp rise in petrol prices that has increased transportation costs and strained workers’ welfare.

The governor made the announcement on Monday in Oyo town during the supervision of the YEAP-SAFER support disbursement and stakeholder engagement programme held at the Fashola Agribusiness Hub.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Makinde said the allowance, which will take effect from March, would run for an initial period of three months. He explained that the measure is aimed at cushioning the impact of rising fuel prices on workers and ensuring sustained productivity across ministries, departments, and agencies in the state.

The governor noted that the initiative forms part of the state government’s broader response to prevailing economic challenges. He said the increase in transportation costs, driven by the ongoing energy crisis, has placed significant financial pressure on civil servants.

Mr. Makinde added that details on how the allowance would be disbursed would be communicated through appropriate government channels. He assured workers that the government remains committed to supporting their welfare during this difficult period.

He emphasised that the transport support scheme is designed to ease the burden on workers while maintaining efficient service delivery across the state.
