Kaduna Health Workers Deny Strike Plans, Say Services Will Continue

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Kaduna State Council, has dismissed rumours of a planned statewide strike, assuring residents that there is no intention to shut down health services across the state.

The union clarified the matter on Monday in Kaduna, following reports circulating on social media suggesting that health workers were preparing for industrial action that could disrupt services in government health facilities.

In a statement addressed to the Head of Service of Kaduna State, MHWUN described the reports as false, misleading, and unverified. The statement was signed by Mr. Sani Yusuf Saulawa on behalf of the union’s Chairman.

According to the union, the clarification became necessary to prevent panic and reassure the public that health services would continue without interruption.

“The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, Kaduna State Council, has no plan whatsoever to embark on any strike action in the state,” the statement read.

MHWUN commended the Kaduna State Government, under Gov. Uba Sani, for what it described as proactive policies and interventions aimed at improving the health sector, noting that these measures had strengthened trust and cooperation between the government and health workers.

The union listed several achievements of the state government, including the approval and implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS/CONMESS) for health workers across the state, including those under the State Primary Health Care Board (SPHCB).

Other milestones cited include the promotion and payment of three years’ outstanding promotions, the renovation and upgrading of 255 health facilities and general hospitals, and the supply of essential medical equipment to primary health care centres and general hospitals.

The statement also noted the provision of ambulances to general hospitals to enhance referral services, as well as the ongoing recruitment of 1,800 health professionals under the SPHCB.

MHWUN disclosed that more than 90 per cent of workers under the SPHCB are members of the union, stressing that there is no justification or plan to disrupt industrial harmony through a strike.

The union said it was confident that the state government was aware of its outstanding demands and would address them within the year. It reaffirmed its commitment to industrial peace, dialogue, and cooperation, while urging members of the public to disregard rumours of any planned strike action.
