Edo Disburses N39m Insurance Benefits To Families Of Nine Deceased Workers

By Deborah Bodunde

The Edo State Government has disbursed ₦39 million in insurance benefits to the families of nine deceased public servants under the state’s Group Life Insurance Scheme.

The payment, made in line with the provisions of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), was presented on behalf of Governor Sen. Monday Okpebholo by the Head of Service, Mr. Anthony Okungbowa.

Speaking during the cheque presentation ceremony, Okungbowa said the disbursement reflects the administration’s commitment to the welfare of public servants and their families.

He explained that the gesture demonstrates the government’s resolve to fulfil its financial obligations and ensure that families of workers who die while in active service receive their due benefits.

Okungbowa described the presentation as a significant milestone, noting that it underscores the state government’s dedication to safeguarding the welfare of its workforce even after their death.

He also conveyed the governor’s condolences to the bereaved families and prayed that they find strength and comfort during the difficult period.

The Head of Service added that Edo remains among the few states consistently complying with the provisions of the Contributory Pension Scheme, noting that such compliance has enabled the timely processing and payment of insurance benefits.

Okungbowa also commended Mr. Washington Abbe, Chairman and Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Pension Bureau, for his leadership in managing pension affairs in the state.

Speaking at the event, Abbe said the cheque presentation was in accordance with the provisions of the CPS law, which mandates a group life insurance policy for all public servants enrolled in the scheme.

He explained that the law stipulates that when an employee dies while still in active service, a benefit equivalent to three times the employee’s annual salary is paid to the designated beneficiary.

Abbe added that the state government has consistently met its obligations under the scheme, enabling the prompt settlement of insurance claims.

However, he noted that delays sometimes occur when families of deceased workers fail to submit essential documents, such as death certificates and other required records.

Abbe reaffirmed the Pension Bureau’s commitment to supporting the families of deceased employees and ensuring that all legitimate claims are processed in accordance with the law.
