The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has denied allegations that the Lagos State Government failed to compensate the family of a deceased highway sanitation worker.
The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) had alleged that compensation promised to the family of Mrs. Aishat Muhammed, who died on May 7, 2025, had not been paid.
In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos, LAWMA described the claim as inaccurate and not reflective of the true situation.
The authority said it engaged with the deceased’s family through its operational partner, Highway Managers, which directly employed Mrs. Muhammed.
According to LAWMA, discussions with the family resulted in a mutually agreed compensation arrangement.
The agency disclosed that a total of N4,340,000 was paid to the deceased’s son as full and final compensation.
It said the payment covered an insurance settlement, burial support, and additional financial assistance, including salary support extended after the incident.
LAWMA added that the agreed sum was duly received and that the matter had been concluded based on the understanding reached with the family.
The authority expressed sadness over the incident, extended its sympathies to the bereaved family, and reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, safety, and protection of sanitation workers across Lagos State.
It also urged media organisations to seek clarification before publication to ensure accurate and responsible reporting.
